NASCAR Revives Lug Nut Rule

NASCAR teams hoping to shave time off pit stops by replacing only four lug nuts on wheels will now face penalties from the sanctioning body, according to a memo sent to organizations Monday.

The memo states that all tires, wheels and all five lug nuts "must be installed in a safe and secure manner at all times during the event."

Failure to comply can result in penalties ranging from a written warning for pre-race violations (wheels not having five lug nuts glued in place) to a minimum $20,000 fine, one-race suspension and probation for the responsible crew chief if a post-race inspection turns up a car that does not have five lug nuts in place on each wheel.

If found during pre-race, the infraction is considered an unapproved adjustment, and the violator will be required to correct the issue and drop to the rear of the field before the start of the event.

Multiple offenses for infractions will result in escalating penalties.

NASCAR stopped policing how many lug nuts teams were installing during pit stops after the 2014 season. In 2015, the sanctioning body debuted its Pit Road Officiating (PRO) system that utilizes cameras to regulate pit road.

According to Monday's memo, updated methods for officiating the new rules will be introduced at a later date. "That process will continue to evolve over time and we will provide further updates as that model progresses."

By tightening, or in some cases installing, only four lug nuts on each wheel, teams have often gained an advantage during pit stops. But the practice has led to a rise in the number of loose wheels this season, often sending a driver back to pit road to correct the problem.

While at least one NASCAR crew chief has noted that there have been occasions when a car would end the race with fewer than five lug nuts in place, NASCAR Chairman & CEO Brian France said Monday that the inspection process would be no different than it has been for other areas of the vehicles that are examined each week.

"When things are altered we have to deal with that," France said during an appearance on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. "There's no difference in that. ... Really what you're hearing is just how close and tight competition is across the board. And that's why the crew chiefs, and rightfully so, are worried about every millisecond; they don't want to get one of these ... penalties and understandably so. They're trying to get it right and we're trying to get it right.

"And by the way, we will. We have for 60 years and we will always sort it out, especially when it comes to safety. We will get to the right place as fast as we can. That's Job 1 for us."

Last week, three-time premier series champion Tony Stewart expressed concerns that the safety of competitors was being overlooked by not mandating all five lug nuts be properly installed on wheels. A day later, when Stewart announced he would return to competition after missing the season's first eight races, NASCAR announced it had fined the co-owner/driver $35,000.

"It wasn't (a case of) saying they're not doing their job," Stewart told FOX Sports during Sunday's pre-race show. "I just felt like this is one thing they dropped the ball on. So, they're doing a good job. They're looking at it. They're going to address it and make it right, and down the road we won't have to worry about this again, hopefully."

France said Stewart is "very aware of how we approach criticism ... of the sport and the product of the racing itself, and safety is paramount of that. Tony is very aware of how we look at that. We allow them to criticize and give their point of view way more than any other sport. ... We're thick-skinned; we get it.

"It's when you go into the area of denigrating the racing product. That's all we have in NASCAR, the highest quality of competition. When you start working against that in any way, we're going to have to deal with that. And everybody understands that."(NASCAR.com)

Austin Cindric Joins Martin-McClure Racing

Abingdon, VA, April 26, 2016 – Just one week after achieving victory at Bristol Motor Speedway, Martin-McClure Racing owners, Hal Martin and Eric McClure, announced today the addition of Austin Cindric to the team’s driver roster. Cindric will pilot Martin-McClure Racing’s No. 39 entry for a pair of NASCAR K&N Pro Series events beginning with this weekend’s Biscuitville 125 at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, VA. Cindric will also compete in the NKNPSE event at Watkins Glen International Raceway later this year.

At just 17 years of age, Cindric has already built a diverse, and impressive, racing resume including four Global Rally Cross victories, as well as one International Motorsports Association victory in the 2015 season alone. Cindric also achieved numerous other podium finishes across three different series during his 2015 race season.

“We are so pleased to have Austin Cindric compete for us this season. His resume, particularly at his age, is impressive and he comes from a tremendous racing pedigree. He’s a quality young man as well, and we are looking forward to giving him the best chance for success at VIR,” said team co-owner Eric McClure.

Hal Martin, also co-owner of Martin-McClure Racing agreed, “We are proud to add another talented driver to our driver roster for 2016. We are ready to build off of our success at Bristol and we think Austin is a great fit for our team. We look forward to giving him an opportunity to showcase his abilities behind the wheel.”

In preparation for his first road course start in a NASCAR-style car, Cindric attended a test session at the historic Virginia course with the MMR racing team.

“I am really excited to get to race at VIR. I had never driven a stock car on a road course until our test, and I had a blast! The cars are a handful with the high horsepower and heavy weight, but they are quite enjoyable to drive. I am very grateful of the opportunity to compete for Martin-McClure Racing, especially after their recent success. I look forward to what the weekend brings,” said the 17-year-old driver. Germain Racing Departs Richmond with 29th Place Finish

Richmond, VA (April 24, 2016) - Casey Mears and the Germain Racing team arrived in Richmond, VA, fresh off of two solid runs and a new sponsor announcement that saw Duracell climb aboard their No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS for the 2016 season. While they looked to turn in another strong performance, Richmond International Raceway would put up resistance and send the team home with a 29th place finish.

"We struggled all day and just couldn't get the car where we needed it to be," Mears said. "It's been a tough year so far, but not from a lack of effort. We're hoping we can get it turned around next week at Talladega, where we've always been strong. It's also the GEICO 500, so everyone's excited to get there and get the No. 13 GEICO Chevy on-track."

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series hit the track on Friday, but so did Mother Nature, causing the cancellation of qualifying after heavy rain blanketed the ¾-mile oval. Mears and his GEICO Chevy would be forced to start from the 25th position when the ninth race of the 2016 season went green on Sunday afternoon.

When the racing action got underway on Sunday, Mears quickly encountered a handling issue that would plague him for most of the afternoon. After going a lap down to the leaders, he would hustle throughout the day and work his way back onto the lead lap by lap 364. After a long day of racing, Mears and Germain Racing would be credited with a 29th place finish.

Mears and Germain Racing will now head to Talladega Superspeedway where they will take part in their sponsor's namesake race, the GEICO 500.

Casey Mears and the No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet SS will hit the track at Talladega Superspeedway for the weekend's opening practice session on Friday, April 29th, at 2:30 PM (ET). Qualifying will follow on Saturday, April 30th, at 12:30 PM (ET).
The GEICO 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race is on Sunday, May 1st, and it will be televised live on FOX beginning at 1:00 PM (ET). The Motor Racing Network (MRN) will carry the live radio broadcast, along with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, channel 90. (Germain Racing)
