Cole Custer had a super fast car on Saturday running up with the faster cars of Joey Logano, Justin Allgaier, and Tyler Reddick. Custer even had an opportunity to run for the lead but on a final restart, he got stuck behind the No. 39 of Ryan Sieg who didn't get fresh tires during the final caution. Getting stuck behind him hurt his chance to advance past Logano and the No. 00 fell outside the top-five as the race ended.
"We had good speed today out of our Haas Automation Ford Mustang, but we got caught up there on the final restart behind the 39 car who was on old tires," said Custer. "I don’t know if we had enough to compete with the 22 car, but we definitely had a top-three car. It was a good day for the team and I’m glad we were able to put on a good race for my hometown fans.”
The sixth-place finish was his third top-ten finish of 2018. It was a strong run that was needed especially as the team rebounded from two straight crashes at Daytona and Atlanta. The stage points earned also helped him move up to sixth from 11th in points. As the west coast swing comes to an end, the XFINITY Series takes two weeks off before returning on April 7th at Texas Motor Speedway. (Koelle,2018)
