As the series entered the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the 1992 Hooters 500 on November 15 the NASCAR circuit never knew how special this race would become 24 years later. Six drivers entered the Hooters 500 with a mathematical shot at winning the NASCAR Winston Cup. Davey Allison led the points heading into Atlanta but by the races end an accident would put Allison out of the Championship hunt. Allison would ultimately finish third in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series points with the battle coming down to just two drivers.
Junior Johnson's Bill Elliott and AK Racing's owner and driver Alan Kulwicki would be the two drivers within reach of winning the NASCAR Winston Cup Series Championship as the race was coming to an end. Elliott would win the race but it wouldn't be enough for Elliott to be crowned champion as Elliott only led 102 laps compared to Kulwicki leading 103 laps and he would gain the bonus points for leading the most laps that would ultimately crown Alan Kulwicki the NASCAR Winston Cup Champion for 1992.
24 years later that is still known as one of the greatest battles for the Championship in the History of NASCAR. (Koelle,2016)
