A year after nearly losing his life, Hinchcliffe returned with a mission by posting the fastest four-lap average of the day at 230.946mph in the Arrow Honda for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. Hinchcliffe will be among the nine drivers who will compete for the pole for the prestigious 100th Indianapolis 500. Marco Andretti just misses the Top 9 getting bumped off by his teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay. Ryan Hunter-Reay qualified second with an average speed of 230.805mph. Will Power also joined Hinchcliffe and Hunter-Reay Helio Castroneves. Also racing for the pole and an extra $100,000 for winning the pole. Townsend Bell, Josef Newgarden, Carlos Munoz and Simon Pagenaud will also be eligible for the money and pole position.
