Kyle Busch Caps off Dominant Run with Historic Coca-Cola 600 Victory

CONCORD, N.C. - For the second time in three years, a driver straight up dominated all 600 miles in the Coca-Cola 600. This time it was the driver of the No. 18 M&M's Toyota Camry.

Kyle Busch led 377 of the 400 laps to secure his 47th career victory. With his 47th victory came a historical achievement for the Las Vegas, Nevada native.

The Charlotte Motor Speedway was the only active track that Kyle Busch had never won a points-paying event and with the victory on Sunday, Busch became the first driver ever to win at every active track on the schedule. Pocono and Charlotte were the final two tracks he'd never won at and last July, Busch knocked Pocono off the list. After failing to pull off the victory in October, Busch finally puts a lock on that ever elusive Charlotte trophy, adding his name to the hat of former winners of the longest NASCAR race.

The last driver to dominate the 600, Martin Truex Jr., finished the race in second to cap off a solid week after visiting with President Donald Trump in Washington on Monday. Denny Hamlin finished third while Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top-five.

There were 11 cautions for 54 laps. Two major incidents knocked out two major contenders with the first one happening on lap 85. Kevin Harvick made his way up through the field after starting from the rear. He made it up to sixth before losing the right front tire, putting his No. 4 into the outside wall in the middle of turns three and four. His night would be ended and he'd earn his second DNF of 2018.

Ryan Blaney showed speed throughout the beginning stages of the race but as the race continued, Blaney began complaining about issues with the engine. On lap 280, Blaney's engine gave way and his car went up into a fireball. He was able to walk away from the fire.

There were nine lead changes amongst four drivers with Busch leading 377, the most of the four. Joey Logano led 12 laps, Denny Hamlin led nine, and Brad Keselowski led two.

Kyle Busch continues to lead the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series points series while Joey Logano remains in second. Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski remain in third and fourth while Martin Truex Jr. passed Kurt Busch to round out the top-five in points.

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to the Pocono Raceway next for the Pocono 400. Coverage of the Pocono 400 begins at 2 p.m. ET and can be seen live on FOX Sports 1. There are 13 events remaining in the MENCS regular season and as the temperatures begin to heat up, business will begin to pick up. (Koelle,2018)
