Best Finish for Cole Whitt Since October at Martinsville in 2017

Cole Whitt earned his best finish since the last time the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series ran at the Paperclip last season. The driver of the No. 72 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Whitt is driving a partial schedule for Tri-Star Motorsports this season after he ran the full 36 race schedule for the organization in 2017.

On Monday, Whitt competed in his fourth Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race of the 2018 season. Corey LaJoie piloted the No. 72 in the other two races at Daytona and ISM Raceway. The 27th place finish was one up from where he finished in the previous three starts in the season. Whitt finished 28th three straight races (Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Fontana) and to the normal eye, a 27th place finish isn't much of an improvement. The 27th place finish was his best finish since the series last raced at the Martinsville Speedway in October of last year.

Whitt finished ahead of a Daytona 500 champion and a former race winner on Sunday which is an inner victory that the normal eye would overlook. To outrun teams like Roush Fenway Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports, and Richard Childress Racing is also a big deal being as Whitt's No. 72 Chevrolet was lacking big money sponsors, in fact no primary sponsorship at all.
