Talladega Chase Race Showed Flaws in Chase

When it came to the Talladega Chase Race yesterday, it showed many of the flaws seen in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series' Chase and it just didn't sit well with very many fans including many Joe Gibbs Racing fans in attendance for the Hellmann's 500 yesterday in Talladega Superspeedway.

As many of you all know, we were in the grandstands yesterday for the Hellmann's 500 and I noticed one thing amongst the fans. Unhappiness with a particular three cars who rode in the back a majority of the race. In a smart strategy, three of the five Joe Gibbs Racing drivers rode in the back of the pack through the whole race keeping their distance from the pack for in the instance on IF the "Big One" happened those three wouldn't need to worry about being involved. Fans of these three drivers began to question why they paid money to see their favorite driver ride in the back and it also sparked an outrage with fans all around. It was a smart strategy but was it right? Not in my opinion and it almost cost their teammate Denny Hamlin a spot in the chase as a few points in the race. In the end, NASCAR said these three drivers were giving their 100% but I am sure many of you don't see it that way.

This is another thing that was pointed out yesterday by numerous fans in attendance and it's been an issue ever since the Chase began back in 2014 and that is the fact that regular season wins doesn't matter anymore once we get to this stage or round of the chase. Yesterday we saw two of the top contenders in the Chase and Regular season fall out of the chase due to engine failures. Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski both had four wins a piece leading up to Talladega and it takes just one race, or two in Brad Keselowski's case to eliminate them. NASCAR continues to push this "Winning Matters" motion but we continue to see things like this happen where the driver who wins the most in the season doesn't make the Final Four or they make it in within inches. It's something that needs to be examined and I think if you win the most races in a season it should automatically make you one of the four drivers in the final four which would give the other drivers in the field something to shoot for and race for, Competition would rise within the whole field. I just think we should reward the guy who gains the most victories in a season kinda like we do with the Points Leader if he doesn't have a victory in the regular season.

Another thing it pointed out was the fact that Talladega doesn't need to move anywhere in the Chase. It just needs to be ran smarter unlike what happened back in May. It isn't dangerous if you don't make it dangerous and that was the number one thing drivers were complaining about the dangers of Talladega being a Elimination race. The Chairman of Talladega Superspeedway Grant Lynch noted this weekend that "Talladega will still be an elimination race no matter where they put it." and that is true because some drivers could exit Talladega in so deep of a hole they would be in a must win situation at Kansas but we wouldn't have just one driver like that and it would make Kansas just as dangerous as Talladega. With only two cautions coming out yesterday due to an accident it showed that smart racing can be done and with smarter driving, we can do Daytona just like that also end of story.
In front of a packed house yesterday in Talladega it wasn't something that many fans were happy about. Yes it gave us media members something to talk about and gave you the fans to become just like Water Cooler Dale. I want to hear your opinions about what happened so if your seeing this on Facebook comment on the post or just comment below. (Koelle,2016)
