Remember When? - Derrike Cope Edition

It was 1990 at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach Florida for the biggest race of the year, The Daytona 500. With just a few laps to go in the Daytona 500, Derrike Cope set in second in the #10 Purolator Chevrolet. Before this race Derrike had never finished better than 6th place in any of his starts and as time progressed it looked as if Derrike Cope would finish second on used tires while Dale Earnhardt Sr., who was on four fresher tires, would win his first Daytona 500 after so many failures. When the white flag fell Cope was still in second but as the field entered turn 3, Dale Earnhardt Sr. had a tire go down and surrendered the lead to Derrike Cope. Derrike would hold off the #1 of Terry Labonte and the #9 of Bill Elliott.

The year is 2016. 26 years after that famed Daytona 500 happened the #70 Car in the NASCAR Xfinity Series will be painted up just like the famed #10 Purolator Chevrolet in Saturday Afternoon's VFW Sports Clips Help A Hero 200 at the Darlington Raceway. The driver hasn't changed as it's still Derrike Cope. Derrike Cope Racing is coming off of it's season best finish with Timmy Hill at Road America last weekend, Derrike looks to continue the momentum in the car that has delivered him success at Daytona and Dover in 1990. 26 years and Derrike Cope is still racing is one of the most impressive stories going on in the Xfinity Series Garage where we look at all of these young drivers. Derrike is certainly a shoe in for the NASCAR Hall Of Fame. (Koelle,2016)
