Newgarden Has Goals Set on Road America Return Date

Josef Newgarden crashed a few weeks ago at the Texas Motor Speedway during the Firestone 600. Josef suffered a broken right shoulder and hand after a scary two-car crash also involving Conor Daly. The Hendersonville, TN native is looking at when to make his return to action after the violent crash at Texas and it could be as early as Road America this weekend. IndyCar’s entry list distributed Tuesday listed Newgarden as the driver of Ed Carpenter Racing’s No. 21 car, a Chevrolet. In order to race this weekend, Newgarden must be positive he can handle the pain that will come driving on the 14 turn road course in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. He was replaced at last week’s test at Road America by JR Hildebrand, who figures to at least be on standby Friday when practice begins. The Kohler Grand Prix is a 50-lap race Sunday at 1:15 p.m. ET on NBCSN. Newgarden is fourth in the season standings, 98 points behind leader Simon Pagenaud. Newgarden and his team must be sure he is able to race because The Verizon IndyCar Series does not allow driver changes during a race. We will certainly see if Newgarden will be able to race this weekend in Road America. You can catch the recap of the race here on The Motorsports News Source on Sunday! (Koelle,2016)
