J.D. Motorsports consists of Landon Cassill, Ross Chastain, and Harrison Rhodes. All three drivers have talent in a racecar. J.D. Motorsports has had great sponsorship follow them throughout the years. For example Flex Seal, That product that if you ever purchase a row boat from some random guy on the side of the street, who just happened to replace the bottom of the boat with a screen door. You can take the Flex Seal and waterproof seal the bottom of the boat. Then you can float onto your own oasis and show support for this low money team. J.D. Motorsports have always been one of the underdog teams in the Xfinity Series. Here is my opinion of these three drivers who drive for J.D. Motorsports.
Landon Cassill who has been driving a NASCAR for a while has had opportunities behind the wheel and some to grab the checkered flag. Cassill, who came Oh so close to victory in the #40 carsforsale.com Chevrolet at Talladega last season in October, was an experimental driver for Hendrick Motorsports at one time. He currently drives the #40 car for Hillman Smith Racing in the Sprint Cup Series. Cassill has a best finish in the Cup series at Talladega in October last season where he finished 4th. In the Xfinity Series Landon’s best finish is 3rd at Daytona in 2011 with Phoenix Racing. So far this season Landon has had a best finish of 10th at Richmond and an 11th at Talladega this past weekend. Landon is currently 15th in points, right behind his teammate. I think Landon could become a teacher to Harrison and Ross at the restrictor plate tracks because of his experience and this team could possibly become a restrictor plate powerhouse with Landon’s guidance.
Ross Chastain has had experience behind the wheel of a NASCAR and a Truck. Ross made his NASCAR Debut with Turn One Racing driving the #66 at Lucas Oil Raceway in the Camping World Truck Series. He’d soon begin driving for Brad Keselowski Racing. His best career finish came at Iowa during the 2013 Fan Appreciation 200. James Buescher would go on to win that race. Ross made his Xfinity Series debut with Viva Motorsports driving the #55 car for Jamie Dick. National Watermelon Association and National Watermelon Promotion Board would become his primary sponsor. At the end of 2014 Ross was given the opportunity to drive for Tri-Star Motorsports with the National Watermelon Association and National Watermelon Promotion Board as the primary sponsor in a watermelon painted #10 car. He almost made the second round of qualifying by placing the #10 car in 25th place. Ross would rally the #10 car to a 14thplace finish. That must have grabbed the attention of Gary Keller because at the start of 2015 Ross was announced as the driver of the #4. At Daytona the team qualified 38thand finished 25th. Atlanta brought a 17th place finish; California saw this same finishing position. At Thunder Valley Ross finished 27th, Richmond had another 17thplace finish, and finally at Talladega he finished 25th. Ross is currently 14th in points 119 points behind Ty Dillon.
Harrison Rhodes made his Xfinity Series debut driving for Rick Ware Racing in association with R3 Motorsports. His best finish with that team was 23rd at Iowa Speedway in 2013. Harrison moved to SR2 Motorsports, then to GIC-Mixon Motorsports (now JGL Motorsports) and then to James Carter Racing. In 2015 Harrison would move to J.D. Motorsports and drive the #0 Chevrolet Camaro. His best start so far this season has been 22nd at Richmond. Harrison is someone who I personally haven’t met nor really heard of but I’m sure with time that will change.
J.D. Motorsports is a team who you don’t always expect in the top 15 but they somehow use the funding they have and make a consistent team. I expect if they can keep Landon Cassill then that team could become a team that could compete against the big teams of JR Motorsports, Roush Fenway Racing, or even Richard Childress Racing who as of late have been very consistent. This is definitely one of those teams to keep an eye on as the season continues and they could possibly seal a win and maybe a championship. Get it, Seal? (Koelle,2015)
